Oral presentation

Firstly, I would like to thank my team mates, Hazel and Jia Min for their time and effort placed in the proposal and oral presentation. Although we do have some miscommunications along the way, we managed to resolve them and got along pretty well. Overall, it was a great learning experience.

Being the last two teams to present wasn’t as easy as it seems. In fact, it was rather stressful as there were many expectations we had to meet, especially those from Brad. :x Being the last two teams, we had more time to “doll up” our slides and practice our speech; therefore, there is a need for us to perform better in order to score (the “kiasu” character”).

Having seen four presentations, our team decided to use white backgrounds and visual aids to enhance our presentation slides. We tried to include colours, mainly primary colours, to add an interesting touch to the slides and also to draw the audiences’ attention. We also had first half of the classroom’s lights dimmed so that the slides would stand out.

Before the presentation begins, I was surprisingly calm. So I thought maybe it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be or perhaps the peer teaching experience did help me calm down. However, I was wrong. The nervousness and anxiety set in after the presentation started. As I watched Jia Min made her speech, my heartbeat increased.

My biggest fear for every oral presentation was the problem with fidgeting. I have this habit of pacing up and down or swaying when I’m standing. This “phenomena” would be exaggerated whenever I’m nervous or excited. Previously, Brad even commented that I was “dancing in front of the screen” during peer teaching. Hence I kept reminding myself not to move.

I thought I had little movement during my speech and was actually quite happy about it. However, according to the feedback I received from my peers, I had quite a lot of limb movements. This is something that I have to work on.

During the presentation, I made a blunder and stutter as I try to conclude the presentation. There was some distractions and I could not focus on my speech. I hope the stammering did not affect my performance or made me look as though I memorised my script. As discussed in class, such situations may arise and all of us should be mentally prepared for such circumstances. At that very moment, I had an embedded lesson which I failed.

  1. Hey Shin Ye!

Congratulations for having survived the presentation!=) i can empathize with you.I was quite calm before coming to class for the presentation, and pictured in my mind that i would speak fluently. However, things could happen unexpectedly. We can take these experiences and be more prepared next time.

During the presentation, i felt you projected your voice clearly. You spoke confidently at times and had good expression as you speak. This made the presentation more captivating. It was not dull to me, and it felt convincing.

As you have already realised, you do tend to fidget quite obviously during the presentation. It was from this movement that i could sense how tense you were.=) Now that you are aware of this habit, perhaps next time you could try transferring that energy to somewhere else instead? Moving your hands could make your action look more natural.i'm not sure if this would help but maybe you could try.At least it looks more 'professional' that way.

As a group, we felt that certain parts of the presentation seemed repetitive. Was it because you wanted to emphasise on your points? The visual aids(especially the ones with all your faces, and the way you close your presentation) were certainly entertaining! However, as discussed in class, certain level of humour could be acceptable depending on how formal the presentation is.If it were a real life situation, it might not be appropriate.Other than that, the presentation was clear and easy to understand.

Through this module,i believe the exposure, and lessons learnt will better prepare you in the future. So dont be discouraged ok?=)

  2. Hello Bubbly Shiny!!

Aren't we all glad that presentations are finally over? :D

During your presentation, you appeared very confident despite your claims. Although you were shifting your body left and right, it was rather moderate compare to your peer teaching where Brad commented that you were *cough* dancing in front of the screen.

You appeared to be more familiar with your content as there are very few referring to the screen. I did not realize you stuttered, perhaps it was natural to have a little stuttering. So don't worry about it. :D

Beside that, were you so nervous that you were holding your stomach? Perhaps you could gesture your hands a little, without flailing.

Your slides were clear and effective, hence it was very easy to understand.

Overall, I think your presentation was excellent. Even though you mentioned that there were some problems with communication, I think it is a good experience. Thank you for your hard work!!

    =D

  3. Hi Shiny!

Firstly, I felt that you did a great job in delivering your points across to the audience. You spoke confidently with a good use of emphasis in your speech and good eye contact with the audience. In addition, I did not have a feeling that your speech was ‘scripted’.

I felt that the presentation was a good learning experience for all of us. Clearly, you are aware of your weakness and do keep it in mind so that you can improve on your future presentations.

Next, I could see that efforts made by your team on using visual aids to captivate the audience’s attention. The presentation of your ideas were clear and easy to understand.

Lastly, I felt that your team had connected well with the audience. (I still can remember the three SAVE). =) However, I agreed with Ruth that the use of humour would depend on the nature of the presentation in the real working world.

    Well done Shiny!

    Hugs,
    Peiling

  4. HI DOD!

    Thanks for all the compliments!

Our group tried to inject some humour as we were afraid the the presentation might be too dry and boring. Somehow we overlooked the fact that it is supposed to be a formal one, especially when our audiences are members from NUSEU. We'll definitely take note of that in future.

I understand that there were some overlaps between "proposed solution" and "benefits".
Because every point was closely related and we tried to draw the links between each points, it was inevitable that overlaps occur. Perhaps it was the way we put it across, which made it repetitive.

YES! I was very nervous! I was so nervous that I experienced gastric upset during the presentation and even after it ended.

OH! I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in group 2 for being such a wonder audience. All your beautiful smiles sis make the presentation a lot more relaxing. THANK YOU!

    Love,
    Shiny
